Lisbon, Portugal, July 7, 2007 - Announced yesterday in
Lisbon, Portugal, 100 million people participated in a vote to
determine the new Seven Wonders of the World. Voting for the new
Seven Wonders of the World was conducted by phone and the internet.
Among those included in the Seven Wonders are the Great Wall of
China, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Statue of
Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the Colosseum in Italy, Petra (Rose
City) in Jordan, and The Roman Colosseum in Italy.
Over the years, the list of the Seven Wonders of the World has
changed. The original list of the Seven Wonders of the World was
compiled by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC.
Among those listed by Herodotus were the Great Pyramid of Giza, the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the
Colossus of Rhodes, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at
Halicarnassus, and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
In medieval times, the Seven Wonders of the World included
Stonehenge, the Colosseum, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the
Great Wall of China, the Porcelain Tower of Nanjing, the Hagia
Sophia, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Taj Mahal has often been
included as well in the Seven Wonders of the World. Surprisingly,
the Great Pyramid at Giza has fallen off the list. Most of those
that fell off the original list for the Seven Wonders of the World
are monuments which simply no longer exist or lie in ruins, like
the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the Temple
of Artemis at Ephesus.
