Aztec Pyramid Ruins Found in Poor
Neighborhood
Mexico City - In the news on August 2, 2007, Aztec pyramid
ruins have resurfaced in a poor district of Mexico City after
more than 500 years underground. Razed by Hernan Cortes in the
sixteenth century, a construction project revealed walls from
the Aztec pyramid ruins. The neighborhood of Iztapalapa in
which the Aztec pyramid ruins were found is well-known for its
drugs and violent crime. Due to urban congestion and
overcrowding, the ruins of the Aztec pyramid found in June
beneath the neighborhood's central plaza have long remained
hidden, although researchers knew generally where they
lay. Other important ruins associated with the Aztec pyramid
building culture have recently been excavated including an
important Aztec
altar. The pyramid shown right is an example of the Aztec
pyramid building ruins found, although obviously mainly intact.
